Police engage kidnappers in another gun battle, kill 3, rescue 7 victims

Some criminals have lost their lives thanks to the gallant men of the police command in Edo state.

The officers at risk to their lives, engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle. At the end of the battle, three kidnappers were on the ground, dead.

Also, seven kidnapped victims were rescued by the police, Premium Times reports.

This was disclosed in a statement by Kontongs Bello, the Edo police spokesperson. According to him, police worked with a local vigilante team to achieve the feat.

The suspected kidnappers were encountered at the Ahor axis of the Benin-Lagos bypass, Punch added.

He did not say if the police sustained any casualty in the battle.

Recall Legit.ng reported that a divisional police headquarters in Odoro Ikpe in Ini local government area of the Akwa Ibom state was attacked by gunmen.

Five police officers including the wife of an officer were killed during the attack. Facilities, vehicles, and other valuables in the building were also reportedly destroyed by the gunmen.

The spokesperson for the police in the state, Odiko MacDon, confirmed the incident.

He said:

“Yes, there was an attack of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Odoro Ikpe. Six persons, including five officers and a wife of an officer, were killed.”

In another report, a former governor of Enugu state, Chimaroke Nnamani, said state police is not the solution to the security challenges in Nigeria. Nnamani said the factors that led to the abolition of regional police are still very much available.

He stated that some of the factors include the influence of political players, traditional players and interference by elites.

The former governor explained that the only way state police can function effectively is if it was made to be uniform in all 36 states of the federation.
