Herdsmen attacks: You’re not prepared for governance – Kukah tells Buhari

Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Mathew Hassan Kukah, has blamed the incessant attacks allegedly carried out by Fulani herdsmen on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government’s unpreparedness to tackle the many challenges bedevilling the nation.

Kukah spoke to newsmen in Sokoto during the inauguration and dedication of the new secretariat of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Sokoto State chapter.

According to him, it was uncharitable on the part of government to blame citizens or any particular group for the incessant attacks instead of looking for a way to tackle the challenge.

The clergy said, the primary responsibility of governance was to provide security for its citizens, noting that it was sad that people will come to power unprepared.

He said, “I hear people blaming Nigerians, and blaming Fulani herdsmen and blaming. It is really the failure of government to address the very many problems that this country faces.

“It is a bit of a pity, because it also means that sometimes people come into power not fully prepared, I thought if this government had taken inventory of the nature of the problems that this country face, we will not be where we are today.”

He observed that the responsibility of government was to fix problem not to create one and that such primary responsibility ought to be carried out by those in government and not to be shifted to citizens or past governments leaders.

The Catholic Bishop pledged the resolve of the church to continue to pray for God’s intervention, but was quick to call on the nation’s leaders to recognise the urgency it required to fix the challenges and make the country going.

Kukah also expressed concern over the polarized nature of the country, saying it had reduced the nation to a subject of ridicule among the comity of nations.
