Shekarau to meet Tinubu as group mulls ditching Kwankwaso's NNPPBy Uche Amunike

Three months after former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP he seems geared towards dumping his party.

According to his spokesperson, Yau Sule, Shekarau who currently represents the Kano Central District in the senate is billed to meet with the APC presidential flag bearer, Ashiwaju Bola Tinubu, Wednesday, in Abuja as his group watches out for its chances ahead of the 2023 general election.

Since their defection, Ibrahim Shekarau’s followers had been saddened by the way things have been going on so far in the NNPP.

The group had earlier demanded that the party should implement the agreed terms of agreement that was reached before its members defected.

According to Sule, both sides agreed that an unspecified number of Shekarau’s Associates would be given nomination ticket for the general election.

His words: ‘Before accepting the offer to join the NNPP, we presented our proposals to the NNPP which they accepted. Unfortunately, they deceived us. None of the agreements reached before defecting to NNPP was fulfilled by Mr Kwankwaso’.

Recall that Ibrahim Shekarau who is a founding member of the APC had defected to the NNPP with thousands of his supporters on May 18, after he fell out with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje about the issue of leadership of the APC.

Shekarau was the presidential flag bearer of the defunct ANPP in 2011 and remained one of the leaders of the party having discussions with the leaders of the other legacy party that led to the birthing of the ruling APC in 2013.

He however defected from the party to the then ruling PDP in 2014 in protest against the new party that was handing over its  structures in Kano to the sitting governor. In 2018 however, Ibrahim Shekarau returned to the APC in 2018 after its Kano State Executive had formed a caretaker committee to have Kwankwaso’s associates who returned to the party that year, integrated.

It therefore came as a surprise when Ibrahim Shekarau’s

group joined Kwankwaso who had defected from the PDP once more to run for presidency under the aegis of the NNPP.

He was given the senatorial ticket of the party, having emerged from the list of candidates submitted by the NNPP to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His associates however didn’t get any tickets.

According to Mr Sule, Ibrahim Shekarau and associates already met with PDP presidential flag bearer,  Atiku Abubakar alongside Party Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu. They have also met with Kashim  Shettima, APC VIce Presidential candidate and will meet with Ashiwaju Bola Tinubu, soon.

Sule confirmed that Shekarau had already summoned a meeting of the Shura Council, which is the group’s topmost decision making body to discuss challenges with the NNPP and proposals that had already been made to the group by both the APC and PDP.

He stated that a 30-man committee had been set up to look into the development and recommend a way forward since the meeting couldn’t reach a decision whether to move into the PDP or APC.

After that, their next line of action will be made known, even as they will still meet with the NNPP national leadership, as they are yet to foreclose remaining in the party.
