Afolabi Kazeem Michael, a socialite popularly known as KC Luxury, was brought to the premises of the federal high court in Lagos on Friday in an ambulance while receiving oxygen.
KC Luxury is standing trial alongside Boniface Freeman Ochoche Sule and Ikechukwu Ekugo Patriarch on a 22-count charge involving allegations of conspiring to export 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine to the United Kingdom and money laundering.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
During court proceedings on Friday, a correctional service officer said the socialite was “critically ill” and had been hospitalised.
The officer called a nurse to testify before the court.
Addressing the court, Bukki Yahya, a nurse attached to the Police Hospital in Falomo, said Michael was admitted to the hospital on October 7, 2026, and diagnosed with asthma and sepsis.
Yahya said Michael remains inside the ambulance in the court premises because he was placed on oxygen.
“My Lord, I am Bukki Yahya, the nurse attending to the patient, Afolabi. He was diagnosed with asthma and sepsis when he was brought to the Police Hospital, Falomo,” the nurse said.
“He is inside the ambulance in the court premises, but we can’t move him here (courtroom) because he is on oxygen.”
After the nurse’s testimony, Emefo Etudo, counsel to the socialite, challenged why his client was brought to the court in such health condition.
Musa Kakaki, the trial judge, ordered that the defendant be returned to the hospital.
BAIL APPLICATION
After the court’s directive, Etudo moved the bail application of the socialite, which was dated October 16, 2026.
The counsel prayed for the release of the socialite to obtain medical treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Etudo said his client’s health condition had deteriorated, while alleging that he had suffered a lung collapse.
He added that the Police Hospital had referred the socialite to LUTH because it lacked the facilities required to manage the health condition.
Etudo said the defendant was withdrawn from LUTH and taken to a correctional centre on October 13 despite the deteriorating medical condition.
However, Abu Ibrahim, the prosecution counsel, opposed the bail application.
The prosecutor argued that the issue of the medical condition had been considered by the court in an earlier ruling.
Ibrahim maintained that the defendant’s underlying ailment remained asthma, although it might have become more acute.
He also urged the court to dismiss the application, adding that the socialite is a flight risk.
He asked the judge to impose stringent conditions if bail was granted.
Responding, Etudo asked the court to grant bail on liberal terms, adding that his client would attend subsequent proceedings.
He added that the socialite’s international passport was already in the custody of the authorities.
Kakaki adjourned ruling on the bail application to October 28, 2026.
