The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised concerns over the title of a new Nollywood film, A Very Dirty Christmas, describing it as offensive to Christian beliefs.

Naija News reports that the association said the title conflicts with the sacred meaning of Christmas, a season that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and represents peace, love, and purity.

CAN stated that linking the holy season with the word “dirty” undermines its spiritual significance and turns a solemn religious celebration into something crude.

While acknowledging the importance of creative freedom in art and film, the association insisted that such freedom should be exercised responsibly, particularly in a religiously diverse country like Nigeria.

The association also expressed worry that the film’s title was approved for public viewing without proper scrutiny from regulatory authorities. CAN called on the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to explain how the title received approval, especially during the Christmas period.

In addition, CAN urged industry bodies, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), to take a clear position on the respectful use of religious themes and symbols in films.

The association asked the film’s producer, Ini Edo, to reconsider the title, issue an apology, and ensure that future productions handle sacred subjects with care.

CAN said that during a period when the country faces moral and social challenges, actions that belittle sacred traditions could worsen divisions and harm mutual respect among communities.
