A screengrab taken on July 13, 2014 fromSoldiers of Borno state capital Maiduguri reportedly arrested and then killed a suspected Boko Haram insurgent who had planted 16 bombs at Baga road fish market.

According to reports, the 50-year-old was spotted by a teenager girl on Wednesday, July 29. Before the arrest, there was a bomb scare at the site, as a result of which many traders had to close their shops.

One Salami Abubakar narrated:

“An IED (improvised explosive device) was discovered and defused by the police bomb squad and everybody thought it was all over until a teenage girl selling kolanut identified a man of about 50 years as the person responsible for the planting of IEDs in the market.

“When he was arrested by soldiers, he denied being a Boko Haram member but after the soldiers tortured him, he led them to places were he planted IEDs. It was shocking that this man planted 16 IEDs in the market. The police has since defused the IEDs.”

The man further narrated that the locals had gone wild and wanted to take the suspect from the military. But the latter, however, made a decision to kill the failed bomber.

On Friday, unfortunately, it did not become possible to avert the tragedy in Maiduguri, where an explosion rocked Gamboru market, killing many people.

Speaking shortly after the attack President Muhammadu Buhari insisted, however, that Nigeria had become stronger and more powerful in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency. He noted that with the full activation of the Multi National Joint Task Force, terrorism would be soon eliminated in the region.
