Lagos collapsed building: No new casualty has been brought in —MD ...By Uche Amunike

It was a day of tears and mourning for Nigerians, especially the family and friends of a young lady, Dr Vwaere Diaso, Tuesday, as she died from a Lagos hospital elevator accident that occurred at the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos State, after it crashed from the 10th floor to the ground floor.

According to findings by our correspondent, the late doctor was rushed to the emergency ward of the Lagos hospital for treatment, but eventually gave up the ghost.

Sadly, the late Dr, Diaso was a graduate of the Babcock University in Nigeria and had only two weeks left at the hospital, to complete her housemanship before the unfortunate incident that led to her death.

After her death, Netizens have expressed their pain, anger and outrage at the management of the hospital, for their negligence at something as important as the elevator that helps people move around in the large hospital. They were also sad that Diaso had to die at the hospital where she works. They were of the opinion that if a doctor could not get medical help at an emergency situation in a hospital where she works, what would happen if a random patient was in the same situation. They took to social media and expressed their pain.

A netizen, Olanrewaju Aiyepola tweeted thus: ‘I am particularly aggrieved because we’ve complained for a long time about this elevator. We’ve maneuvered, managed, and prayed each time we had to use it. Empty promises will be made to fix it….till it killed one of us. Everyone responsible either directly or indirectly must be held accountable.’

Another concerned netizen, Ugwunna Ejikem tweeted: ‘Before she died, it took over an hour for intervention to come. INSIDE a hospital she works in. It’s why I get irritated when ‘lay people’ blame the average doctor for avoidable deaths that occur due to the systemic rot in our health sector. We’re victims too. We’re not spared!’

On his part, Ikem Okona gave a direct blame to the hospital management and asked all to leave the country out of it. His tweet: ‘Name and shame the people responsible, leave the country out of it. You, people, shouldn’t see all misfortune as an opportunity to bash the country. That’s a generalist position and would be deflecting from the real situation and how to curb it.’

Sunny Abimbola pointedly blamed the avoidable Lagos hospital elevator accident that claimed the life of the young Dr Odiaso on a lack of maintenance culture in most public facilities in our country. His views: ‘Why do we lack maintenance culture in our public facilities? It’s sad that the negligence of either the management/government is the cause of her untimely death.
May her soul rest in peace also may God grant her family the fortitude to endure her demise.’

Omolayo also expressed her pain through her tweet: ‘My heart is heavy right now the fear, the pain, the cry, everything she must have felt could have been avoided, I keep getting scared of this country as the day goes by. Another promising life has been taken from us. This is so sad, Nigeria failed us once again.’
