The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Thursday called for the immediate resignation and prosecution of the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, Godwin Emefiele, owing to the allegations levelled against him by the All Progressives Congress, APC, for overseeing the massive looting of funds in the Apex bank.
The APC made this disclosure through a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, Thursday.
The statement called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to promptly call on Emefiele for questioning over allegations by the National Secretary of the illegal APC National Caretaker Committee, Senator John Akpan Udoedehe, who admitted that the pillaging of the nation’s vaults were done under the watch of the CBN governor.
The APC National Publicity Secretary said in a statement, that Nigerians were shocked when Udoedehen opened up on Channels TV program, Politics Today, on Wednesday September 15, 2021 and stated clearly that the CBN governor supervised the looting of money in the Central Bank, then demanded that it was expedient for such a development to be investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and subsequently prosecuted if found wanting.
He also added that the PDP had patiently waited for a week to see if Udoedehen would withdraw his statement or if Emefiele would deny the allegation, to no avail.
He went on to say that the PDP requires Emefiele to vacate the office and turn himself in for investigation because even beyond Akpan Udoehede’s allegation, the tenure of Godwin Emefiele as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has witnessed colossal failures of both physical and monetary policies.
They also stressed that when Emefiele assumed office as CBN governor in 2014, the naira exchanged for N164 (naira) to a dollar but as it stands today in the hands of the APC and him as the CBN governor, the naira has fallen to 600 naira to $1 almost making the nation crumble on its knees.
The statement also unveiled that under the leadership of Emefiele, the CBN failed in its primary duty of managing the economy but instead delved into propaganda with claims that did not in any way reflect the harsh reality on the ground.
The PDP made a plea to the EFCC not to let these revelations be swept under the carpet as they centre on serious economic sabotage which has its sanctions explicitly spelt out in the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, has however disowned the call by the PDP for Emefiele to resign.
In reaction, the Secretary-General of the CNPP, Chief Willie Ezeugwu said that Emefiele did nothing wrong to deserve the call for his resignation.
He asked the PDP to focus their attention on their top and leading members that were resigning in large numbers.
He further stated that the party should be undergoing internal healing, rebuilding and rebranding with the purpose of being better placed to take over power in 2023.
However the activities of Uche Secondus has reduced their politics to child’s play and possibly being for hire to operators of Bureau de Change, BDC, who are fighting the CBN governor for the policy to stop forex sales to BDC operators.
He described PDP as a shadow of itself and described their call for Emefiele’s resignation as laughable and baseless.
