As the trial of the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, commenced, Tuesday, September 22, at the Code of Coduct Tribunal in Abuja over allegation of false declaration of assets, findings have shown that senators have deserted the red chamber.

Activities at the upper chamber of the National Assembly complex had been at low ebb since the trial saga commenced.

It was learnt that workers at the complex reportedly refused to speak on the trial but some of them were seen discussing the matter in groups.

No senator was seen at the premises while the car park was virtually empty.

Some aides of the senators were seen collecting and distributing rams on behalf of the lawmakers for the upcoming sallah celebrations.

Meanwhile, a veteran journalist and two-time CNN Africa journalist award recipient, Olukayode Thomas, had lauded the trial of Saraki saying it is good for democracy but noted that it seemed that the number three man is being persecuted.

While the prosecution of the number three man in the land on any charge at all is good for the society, as it will send a clear signal that the government of the day will not tolerate corruption and the culture of impunity which is killing the country, yet the way he is being hounded and persecuted is sending a wrong signal that this government has no respect for the rule of law. Let facts speak. The Code of Conduct Bureau edict stipulates that once assets are declared, they must be investigated, verified and ascertained immediately,” Thomas said.
