The Federal Government has recorded a major milestone in strengthening the international credibility of Nigerian passports following the successful completion of the Nigeria CSCA ICAO Integration, a move expected to improve passport authentication and ease border clearance for Nigerian travellers across the world.
The development was announced by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in a statement issued by its Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, Nigeria has successfully imported all its Country Signing Certificate Authorities (CSCA) into the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD), an internationally recognised platform used by member states to verify the authenticity of electronic travel documents.
The NIS disclosed that the exercise was successfully concluded during a ceremony held on July 13, 2026, at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada. The event marked the formal completion of the Nigeria CSCA ICAO Integration, which is expected to significantly strengthen the global acceptance of Nigerian passports.
According to the NIS, the initiative was led by the Comptroller-General, Kemi Nandap, as part of ongoing efforts to resolve passive authentication challenges previously experienced by some Nigerian passport holders at selected international border control points.
They explained that the successful integration of Nigeria’s Country Signing Certificate Authorities into the ICAO Public Key Directory creates a trusted digital verification framework. This enables immigration and border management systems in ICAO PKD member countries to instantly verify the authenticity of Nigerian electronic passports during inspection.
The Service noted that the Nigeria CSCA ICAO Integration would boost confidence in Nigeria’s passport system by ensuring that travel documents issued by the country can be authenticated more efficiently and securely by foreign immigration authorities.
Beyond improving verification, the initiative is also expected to reduce delays that may arise during passport inspections at airports and other international entry points. With Nigerian passport data now accessible through the ICAO Public Key Directory, border officials in participating countries can authenticate travel documents more seamlessly, thereby improving the overall travel experience for Nigerian citizens.
The NIS described the achievement as another important step in Nigeria’s drive to modernise its identity management and border control systems through the adoption of globally accepted digital technologies.
The Service added that the milestone reflects the ongoing reforms being championed by the Ministry of Interior under the leadership of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. According to the statement, the ministry remains committed to enhancing border security, improving digital identity management and expanding international cooperation in migration and travel documentation.
The NIS further stated that the successful Nigeria CSCA ICAO Integration is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the administration’s commitment to embracing international best practices and modern technologies that strengthen public institutions.
The Service emphasised that integrating Nigeria’s certificate authorities into the ICAO Public Key Directory will improve interoperability with other participating countries while reinforcing the integrity and credibility of Nigerian passports. Ultimately, the initiative is expected to facilitate smoother international travel, strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s travel documents and further position the country as a committed participant in global aviation and border security standards.
