Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, has held strategic discussions with members of Working People United (WOPU), a coalition made up of labour leaders, professionals, artisans, and workers from various sectors across the country.
The meeting took place during a courtesy visit by the group to the minister, where the delegation presented its organizational structure, long-term vision, and nationwide mobilization plans aimed at increasing political participation among working-class Nigerians.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, WOPU National President, Comrade Williams Akporeha, described the coalition as a platform created to give ordinary Nigerian workers a stronger voice in the country’s political and democratic processes beyond the traditional activities of labour unions.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, Nneamaka Okafor, the meeting focused on national development, economic reforms, and grassroots political engagement.
During the engagement, Heineken Lokpobiri commended the group for its level of organization and commitment toward promoting active citizenship and democratic participation among Nigerians.
Akporeha explained that the coalition draws membership from different sectors of the economy, including a strong presence from workers in the oil and gas industry. He stated that WOPU intends to mobilise citizens at the grassroots level while also encouraging broader participation in governance and national conversations.
The labour leader further disclosed that the coalition has officially endorsed the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing confidence in the administration’s ongoing economic reforms and long-term policy direction.
According to him, although the current economic reforms may appear difficult in the short term, they are necessary to prevent deeper structural problems and reposition the country for future growth and stability.
‘The reforms being implemented are necessary to prevent deeper structural setbacks and to reposition the country for sustainable development,’ Akporeha stated.
He added that WOPU’s strategy includes engaging communities across the country through voter education campaigns, awareness programs, and initiatives designed to strengthen democratic values among citizens.
Akporeha also revealed that the coalition plans to leverage its international diaspora network to reach Nigerians living abroad and encourage their participation in national development initiatives.
Responding to the delegation, Heineken Lokpobiri emphasized the importance of labour groups and grassroots organizations in shaping public opinion and strengthening democracy in Nigeria. He noted that collaboration between government institutions and organised groups remains essential for achieving inclusive national development.
The minister assured the delegation that his office would maintain open communication channels with the coalition and explore opportunities for constructive engagement and operational support where necessary.
According to observers, the meeting reflects increasing efforts by labour-based organizations to play more active roles in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections and national policy debates.
Political analysts have also noted that endorsements from influential labour coalitions and grassroots groups may become increasingly significant as political stakeholders continue consultations and mobilization efforts nationwide.
Meanwhile, Heineken Lokpobiri reiterated the importance of unity, civic participation, and constructive dialogue in addressing Nigeria’s economic and social challenges. He encouraged the group to continue promoting peaceful engagement and democratic involvement among citizens.
Participants at the meeting reaffirmed their commitment to the objectives of Working People United and pledged to actively support the coalition’s programs and nationwide mobilization activities.
The meeting further shows the growing interaction between government officials, labour organizations, and civic groups as discussions surrounding economic reforms, governance, and political participation continue nationwide.
