A post on the X account of Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, has called for a fair trial after more than eight months in detention.
El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 19, after he was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The former governor is facing multiple charges, including allegations of money laundering and conversion of public property.
He is also facing a separate five-count amended charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that he unlawfully intercepted telephone conversations linked to Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA).
The post on el-Rufai’s X account on Friday said the former governor deserved a fair trial.
“Today Exactly 256 days @elrufai in Detention,” the post reads.
“A Human Right, Not a Favor A fair trial is not an act of mercy. It is not a privilege. It is a fundamental human right.”
The post tagged dozens of accounts, including those of foreign leaders and multilateral institutions.
Some of the accounts tagged include US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron, the United Nations, African Union, and the European Parliament.
The post also tagged several foreign media organisations, including CNN, BBC, The Economist, and Washington Post.
The appeal came days after a federal high court in Abuja dismissed el-Rufai’s no-case submission in the case involving allegations of unlawful interception of telephone conversations.
