The alarming rate at which many people are contracting the corona virus in this second phase of its emergence is fast becoming scarry and a thing of grave concern as so many tragic deaths are being recorded all over the globe.
The world, initially thought they had overcomes and recovered from this deadly pandemic as countries and world economies gradually began to ease down on the various restrictions and lockdown imposed on citizens and countries all over the world.
However, with the re-emergence of the virus as witnessed by most Americans citizens especially es citizens during the just concluded elections which led to the death of many, and despite the fact that numerous precautions were put in place, the pandemic took a severe turn as death toll spiralled up.
It is true that the Americans authorities did not just sit back and folded their hands helplessly as the virus ravaged citizens. In fact, major efforts were made by various healthcare officials and medical professionals who battled seriously to tackle the situation, especially as seen in the recent invention of a vaccine to quell and prevent the spread of the covid-19 pandemic. This did not however, stop the spread as many others around the world were getting infected.
In Europe for instance most sports organisations, lovers and entertainers are systematically calling off games or postponing them, some clubs and countries have restricted the numbers of fans allowed into stadiums and in extreme cases where the numbers of infections are severe fans are not allowed at all, All these are being done as a means of precautionary measures, and especially with the recent return of the COVID test conducted were most of the athletes are turning up positive.
Nigeria, one of the most populous countries in Africa who knows how to celebrate without restrictions especially during periods of festivities like Christmas and new year, have also seen the need to enforce precautions in this vulnerable time. The federal government and state governors in line with advice from health experts have collectively come together to announce the need and importance of strictly observing all the covid-19 regulations. In places like Lagos for example, large gatherings were strictly prohibited and COVID-19 regulatory protocols are strictly enforced.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has disclosed recently that 48 per cent of COVID-19 patients in the state do not know they are carriers of the virus.
This statement by prof Abayomi, was made at a briefing in Alausa on Monday, December 28, 2020. He further revealed that 16 per cent of the COVID-19 cases currently in the state were severe cases, while one per cent are in critical condition.
In his own words, “48 per cent of people infected with COVID-19 have very mild symptoms or even asymptomatic. Some of them don’t even know they’re carrying the virus.”
The above statement by the Lagos state health commissioner calls for serious concerns because many are roaming the streets freely not being conscious of the fact that they are careers of this dreaded pandemic and spreading it all around. Moreover, there’s not much testing centres and most citizens are in mood of celebrations and are carefree at this point in time.
