Successful Nollywood filmmaker an actor, Funke Akindele, has made history by solidifying her career in African cinema, with the release of her latest movie, ‘Behind the Scenes’, which has just crossed the N2 billionmark at the box office, making her the first filmmaker to achieve the milestone.
This record-breaking announcement was made on Monday through a post on X by the film’s distributor, ‘FilmOne Entertainment’, which confirmed that the title has now grossed N2,103,039,707 in sales of ticket only.
Speaking, during the announcement, the distributor stated that Funke Akindele’s film officially broke and shattered records, noting that it is the first ever Nollywood production in Africa to cross the N2 billion box office threshold. It further added that the achievement places ‘Behind the Scenes’ as the highest grossing Nollywood film of all times in Africa, as well as the top-grossing release in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
According to FilmOne, Funke Akindele has become the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years, an achievement it described as unprecedented, in West Africa’s film industry.
According to the distributor, the success of the film also reinforces Funke Akindele’s status as Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker, while describing her as the highest grossing writer, director, and producer in the history of West Africa.
In reaction to the support from cinema audiences, the distributor appreciated viewers for believing in the magic of storytelling, even as he described the film’s run as more than a commercial win, but a cultural movement, driven by audience loyalty, and strong word-of-mouth.
The N2 billion milestone shows an important leap from the film’s earlier box office records . Recall that ‘Behind the Scenes’ had previously crossed the N1bn mark before rising into N1.77bn, thereby positioning it among the most successful titles of all times. Its continued rise in earnings has presently placed it strongly at the top of the industry’s all-time rankings.
The lead role of the movie stars Scarlet Gomez, with other ensemble casts that include Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta and Kamo State, alongside several other established and emerging actors.
Significantly, Behind the Scenes explores the theme of black tax, while examining the emotional, social and financial pressures, faced by individuals who are expected to support extended family members.
This theme has resonated strongly with audiences, especially young adults, thereby sustaining cinema, attendance nationwide, and across the wider West African market.
According to her fans, the exceptional performance of the movie can be attributed to a mix of relatable storytelling, as well as her enduring appeal as a film maker who has consistently delivered commercially viable projects.
The success of ‘Behind the Scenes’ adds to the growing list of box office achievements of Funke Akindele. Her earlier releases which include ‘Everybody Loves Jennifer’ recorded rapid earnings growth and set multiple opening-week and cumulative revenue records, launching her as the most bankable figure in Nollywood.
The movie’s cinema run is currently ongoing, and international markets are contributing to its revenue.
The movie is widely seen as defining moments for Nollywood commercial evolution, showcasing the industry’s growing capacity to deliver a billion-Naira blockbuster with international reach.
