President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law two bills establishing new federal universities in Osun and Ekiti States, expanding Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
The newly approved institutions are the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Speaking in Abuja after assenting to the bills on Thursday, Tinubu emphasised the specialised universities would address critical educational needs, drive research and innovation, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.
“These institutions will serve as training grounds for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness,” the President said.
According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria currently has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities.
The establishment of these new institutions aims to further expand access to quality higher education.
On February 3, 2025, Tinubu also approved the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni Town, Tai, Rivers State.
He also consented to the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, which will be converted into a federal institution.
