Over the weekend, The Gambia’s former President Yahya Jammeh left the country after 22 years in power after being defeated in December’s election by Adama Barrow.
Washington, D.C. – Over the weekend, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement regarding The Gambia’s former President Yahya Jammeh leaving the country after 22 years in power after being defeated in December’s election by Adama Barrow.
“I welcome the departure of former President Yahya Jammeh from The Gambia, and I congratulate, once again, Gambia’s new President, Adama Barrow, on not only his December 2, 2016, election but for his demeanor throughout the subsequent crisis.
I would be remiss if I did not heartily commend the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), for their concerted defense of the landmark free and fair election in the Republic of The Gambia of Opposition Coalition leader, now- President Barrow.
The critical role of ECOWAS and the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group, ECOMOG, in peacefully resolving the severe challenge to new-found democracy in The Gambia, speaks eloquently to the critical role to be played by Regional Economic Communities continent-wide. The Presidents of ECOWAS member states are to be congratulated for their commitment, foresight, and leadership in support of The Gambia’s nascent democracy.”
First elected to Congress in 2010, Rep. Bass is serving her fourth term in Congress where she is Ranking Member on the House Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations Subcommittee.
