New Appointment: Tunji Disu Replaces Abba Kyari

The Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba has approved the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu as the new Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, IRT.

This move was made as a result of the decision of the management of the Police Force to fill the vacuum caused by the recent suspension of former head of Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, who is presently being investigated for alleged involvement in a $1.1million dollar internet fraud perpetrated by the popular Abbas Ramon, popularly known as Hushpuppi, who is facing trial for fraud presently in the United States of America.

Disu’s appointment was announced by Force spokesman, Frank Mba in a statement titled, IGP Appoints DCP Tunji Disu as Head, Police Intelligence Response Team. He said the posting was with immediate effect.

The statement partly read: ‘The IG charged the new head of the IRT to demonstrate his professional competence in his leadership of the unit.’

‘He also assured citizens that the IRT will remain focused in the discharge of its duties in line with national statutes and international best practices.’

Mba stated that the police took the decision to refocus the IRT for better service delivery.

He advised the new appointee to bring his professional competence to the new role he is assigned to.

Before he was appointed, Disu was the Deputy Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He also formerly served at the state Criminal Investigation Department, Rivers State as Deputy Head of the unit.

 

Disu is a Deputy Commissioner of Police who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the Lagos State University (LASU) and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.’

‘He is a former Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos State, was the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.’

‘He had also previously served at the State CID, Rivers State as the Deputy Head of the Unit. He was also a former Commander of the Nigeria Police Contingent to the African Union (AU) Peace Keeping Mission in Dafur, Sudan.’

Tunji Disu was promoted from the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP) to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DSP) in April 2019.

He joined the Nigerian Police in 1992 as Cadet ASP and was trained at the Nigeria Police Academy, Kaduna.

Disu had previously served as the Aide-De-Camp to the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed

He has also attended several professional courses both at home and abroad: Small Arms Smuggling Training in Botswana, Internet Fraud Training at the Cambridge University, UK, Strategic Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos, Forensic Investigations and Criminal Intelligence Course at the University of Lagos, amongst others.

‘He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations and Chattered Institute of Personnel management, amongst other professional bodies.’
