Due to the challenges of Insecurity that has besieged the nation over a period of years now, many citizens are of the honest opinion that the personnel’s in charge of providing security of lives and properties, have failed woefully in their responsibility to discharge their duties.
In the last few year Nigerians have witnessed series of kidnappings, robberies, attacks by herdsmen, ritual killings as well as terrorism by Boko-haram insurgents and alleged attack by unknown persons.
With the above experiences, the mindset of many Nigerians especially those who have been victims of these ugly situations, is that of uncertainty and constant fear. Many people are very concerned about how this negative trend could be nipped in the bud and fixed once and for all.
In the light of these persistent security challenges many well meaning citizens have spoken of their disappointments and are insistent that the president should consider replacing the security chiefs as a basic step to remedying problems of insecurity within the federation.
With the recent appointments of new security chiefs for the country, the presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari is satisfied with the performance of the service chiefs he replaced recently.
According to the presidential media representative, who, in an interview on Channels TV, insisted that the presidential decision to replace the service chiefs was simply because president Buhari felt there was need for a change a it was “just felt it was time to have fresh energy.”
The replaced service chiefs had been in office since three months into the first tenure of president Buhari’s election into office as president in 2015.
Moreso, Adesina during the television programme, said that; “The fact that they (the service chiefs) had to leave office does not necessarily mean that they were failures.
“The president in the statement we issued also commended the outgoing service chiefs for their contributions in engendering a safer country.
“That shows that by and large, he was satisfied with their performances and he just felt it was time to rejig the system, have fresh energy, fresh blood and fresh ideas.
“The president did what he feels is right at a given time. A number of times, he has said the service chiefs could do better. It is just the time to have fresh energy and fresh ideas in the theatre of battles where the military is involved. It is just a matter of doing what is best for the country at the best time.”
Meanwhile, the names of the new security heads are Lucky Irabor, a major-general of the Nigerian army appointed as chief of defence staff; Ibrahim Attahiru, chief of army staff; Awwal Gambo, chief of naval staff; and Isiaka Amao, chief of air staff.
Hopefully these new and vital presidential appointees will live up to the expectations of Nigerians and instil confidence and a positive impact on issues bothering on security.
