Bill Withers, the legendary soul singer responsible for songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean On Me”, passes away at age 81 from heart complications. The three-time Grammy award winner was also known for 1970s hits like “Lovely Day”, “Just The Two Of Us” and “Use Me”.

His family confirmed his death on Monday in Los Angeles, in a statement made to the Associated Press. “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,” the family statement said. “A solitary man with a heart-driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other.”

His music has been a source of inspiration and upliftment, especially in these times of the coronavirus pandemic, with artists and various health care workers offering renditions of “Lean On Me” to raise hearts and lift spirits. From the beginning of his career in 1971, with the album “Just As I Am”, Bill Withers spent the next 14 years writing and performing songs that became anthems around the world. He entered the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1999 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 by Stevie Wonder.

The family states that “in this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.” Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fans who have lost a great legend.
