That Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo’s surgery in a Lagos hospital was successfully carried out is no longer news, as the social media has been agog with the joy that he believed in the Nigerian health system enough to have a surgical procedure on his femur, at the Duchess International Hospital, Ikeja-Lagos.
According to the statement released by the hospital management, on Saturday, captioned ‘Successful Medical Treatment of the Vice President’ and signed by its Medical Director, Dr Adedoyin Dosunmu- Ogunbi, a team of six specialist doctors carried out the procedure.
Part of the statement read: ‘The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, was admitted to the Duchess International Hospital GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, today on account of a fracture of his right femur (thigh bone), possibly related to a longstanding injury associated with a game of squash.’
‘He had a surgical operation performed by a team of specialist doctors, including Dr Wallace Ogufere (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon); Dr Om Lahoti (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon); Dr Babajide Lawson (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon); Dr Ken Adegoke (Consultant in Anaesthesia & Critical Care); Dr Oladimeji Agbabiaka (Consultant Anaesthetist); and Dr Adedoyin Dosunmu-Ogunbi (Consultant Physician & Medical Director).’
He assured that Yemi Osinbajo’s surgery was not only successful, but that he was also expected to be discharged within the next few days.
Recall that the ailing Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo’s surgery was made public by an earlier a tweet by him, saying that he was admitted for a surgical procedure.
His words: ‘I have been admitted today at the hospital for a surgical procedure on account of a recurrent pain in the leg possibly sustained from an injury while playing squash.’
This elicited reactions from some Nigerians who commended him for showing a good example by submitting himself to be treated by a Nigerian hospital, unlike politicians in the country who believed in receiving medical treatments outside the shores of Nigeria.

Other tweets basically continued to commend the fact that Yemi Osinbajo’s surgery was performed right here in the country.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has wished the Vice President a quick recovery through his get-well-soon message which was signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. Part of the statement which was titled ‘President Buhari Wishes VP Osinbajo Speedy Recovery after Surgical Procedure’, explained that President Buhari has thanked God for a successful surgery and commended the medical team that carried out the Procedure, for their competence and a job well done, while assuring VP Osinbajo that Nigerians were praying for him and his family.
