Great pandemonium was witnessed in Kwara state, Thursday, as the school community watched a University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) student beat his lecturer to the point of losing consciousness.

The student, simply identified as Salaudeen Waliyu, is a 400 level student of the Department of Microbiology in the school, while the woman he assaulted, Mrs Zakariya is not just his lecturer, but his project supervisor.

Waliyu, who is popularly known as Captain Walz, failed to observe the compulsory Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and therefore went to seek the help of his supervisor Mrs Zakariya.

The reason why this Unilorin student beat his lecturer was because she refused to cover up for him, as the SIWES was a compulsory exercise for every student which made her refuse to give in to his demand. Her refusal made Waliyu furious and he went physical with her.

According to reports, Mrs Zakariya trief to escape and ran into another office for safety, but the enraged Waliyu went after her, broke the window and started to hit her.

It is not everyday that the school community witnesses a UNILORIN student beat his lecturer, so this drama caused a pandemonium as Waliyu kept running after his project supervisor as she ran for her dear life.

While fleeing from him she fell down sustained a head injury.  That was when the UNILORIN student beat her the more and attempted to strangle her, till she fell into unconsciousness.

She was eventually rushed to the hospital while he was arrested by University security personnel and handed over to the police.

During an interview with the press, the Director of Corporate Affairs of the University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, confirmed that the incident of a UNILORIN student beat his lecturer to unconsciousness  was indeed true.

He stated that the lecturer, Mrs Zakariya  was already in stable condition and responding to treatment. He also said that the Vice Chancellor, Prof Sulyman Age Abdulkareem already paid her a visit, alongside the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof Oladiji; the Director, University Health Services, Dr Odunola; some other staff members of the university and some of the victim’s family members. He admitted that a case where a UNILORIN student beats a lecturer was uncalled for, sad and unfortunate and gave the assurance that justice will be done on the matter. He also promised to ensure that the victim is properly taken care of  and that her hospital bill will be taken care of by the university. He reiterated his commitment to the welfare of all members of staff and law-abiding students of the University of Ilorin.

The UNILORIN student who beat his lecturer to the point of unconsciousness is a final year student of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Sciences in the school. His reasons for assaulting his lecturer was because she refused to cover up for him for not observing the compulsory Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
