A lady who claimed to be the sister of Vera Omozuwa, the student who was raped and murdered while studying in a church in Ikpoba Hill, Benin, has accused the police of demanding what was termed “mobility fee” before taking up her sister’s case.
Omozuwa, a 100-level microbiology student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), had died from injuries sustained after she was attacked with a fire extinguisher and raped while studying in a church situated within Benin.
Her death has triggered a wave of outrage and protests on social media platforms in the past days. The Edo state police also said it had arrested a suspect connected to the incident after a fingerprint exam was conducted on the murder instrument.
But a video clip surfaced online on Tuesday, where an irate lady, claiming to be Omozuwa’s sister, accused the police in the state of demanding an unusual fee to fuel their vehicles before taking up the rape case.
It was gathered that she made the allegation after leading some youths in a protest to the state police headquarters where they were received by Ayoola Ajala, a deputy commissioner of police.
“I’m very disappointed in the Nigeria Police Force. I go through my phone every time to check what’s trending and all,” she said.
“I saw a post that the police said they called my father, dad my father refused to call them to go to the station. My father went there severally, he was roaming there as if there was his house.
“He even said they told him they needed mobility money before they can do their job. The Nigeria Police need mobility money first.
“Some are even saying my sister’s incident happened May 14. My sister’s incident never happened on May 14. It happened on the 27th of May, Wednesday. And she died on Saturday night.”
