The Department of State Services, DSS, has reportedly been dragged into the crisis in the All Progressives Congress, APC, leading to a stand-off between chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, and the security agency.
The development has also worsened the crisis of confidence among APC governors.
The governors, Vanguard gathered yesterday, were miffed with the action of two southern governors who lost out in the recent primaries.
Some governors, it was gathered, instigated Oshiomhole’s interrogation by the DSS for hours last Sunday. A key aim of the interrogation, Vanguard learned, was for Oshiomhole to resign. The national chairman, however, stood his ground, saying he will only resign before the President.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who did not get to know about the interrogation until Oshiomhole visited him after leaving his interrogators, has reportedly ordered an investigation.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stepped into the fray, last night, as it accused President Buhari of shielding Oshiomhole who the opposition party claimed carried baggage from his days as governor of Edo State.
The DSS, Vanguard gathered, had on Sunday interrogated Oshiomhole for some hours concerning the recent primaries of the party.
How Oshiomhole called DSS bluff
Oshiomhole was said to have reportedly rebuffed several efforts to deepen the interrogation as he vowed that he would rather sleep in the DSS office than answer more of their questions.
There were indications that issues flowing from his past may have been brought up in what one source yesterday described as a well planned civilian coup that was orchestrated to ease him out of office.
A source privy to the development said the former Edo governor stood his ground and used “streetwise sense of a former activist” to rebuff the claims of inducement and other weighty allegations made against him.
Oshiomhole, it was learned, refused entreaties to sign the resignation paper that was put to him asserting that he would not do so since he still had the confidence of the president.
“He was held for hours, but he stubbornly refused to cave in,” the source said.
Following the interrogation, the party chairman went to the president, who it was learned, expressed his ignorance of the interrogation of the national chairman.
A source said, yesterday, that investigation over the issue had been ordered.
I’m not aware — DSS spokesman
DSS spokesman, Mr. Peter Afunanya, yesterday, claimed ignorance of the interrogation of Comrade Oshiomhole when contacted yesterday.
“I am not aware of what you are saying,” Mr. Afunanya said yesterday.
Vanguard, however, learned that the questioning of Oshiomhole took place on Sunday shortly after he returned from Edo State for a domestic engagement.
Oshiomhole’s ordeal divides APC govs
The interrogation of Oshiomhole, Vanguard gathered, has worsened the crisis in the party with governors aligned to the national chairman rebuking their two southern colleagues who reportedly orchestrated what one source said was a ‘well orchestrated coup.’
The governors, it was gathered, fumed that their two colleagues want to melt the party because of their interests.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu claimed ignorance of the interrogation.
“We do not have any information on this rumour. More so, the Chairman is not around in the country to confirm or deny this. As soon as we have any relevant information, you’ll be updated,” he said.
He said Comrade Oshiomhole travelled abroad on Monday on personal grounds, declining further details about the trip.
The last time Oshiomhole was seen in public was on Friday at a press conference in Abuja during which he frontally rebuffed accusations of compromise levelled against him by Governors Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and Rochas Okorocha of Imo State.
Following the session with journalists, the national party chairman proceeded to Edo State and returned to Abuja on Sunday for the interrogation with the DSS operatives.
He was reported to have left the country on Monday, hours after the session with the DSS operatives.
Buhari protecting Oshiomhole — PDP
Meanwhile, the PDP yesterday accused the president of undermining the rule of law to protect Oshiomhole.
The PDP in a statement issued late yesterday said that it was not unaware of the interrogation of Oshiomhole and of the efforts of the president to save him.
In the statement issued by its spokesman, Mr. Kola Ologbondinyan, the party said that information available to it suggested that Oshiomhole was questioned over his tenure as Edo State governor and on the recent controversial primaries of the party.
“If the Presidency has nothing to hide, it should allow the DSS and EFCC a free hand to investigate Adams Oshiomhole, particularly now that all issues are laid bare before Nigerians.”
APC reacts
APC’s spokesman dismissed the PDP’s reaction to the development yesterday in a terse message to Vanguard. He said: “React to PDP? Is that what Nigerians are asking for? We have spent over three out of our four year mandate and we should be telling Nigerians what we have done, not reacting to the PDP which should be serving punishment for its 16 years of misrule.”
The APC has until November 17 to settle all decisions on the presidential and National Assembly tickets through the window of substitution of candidates which, however, can only be done through the voluntary withdrawal of candidates.
A similar window of substitution only through withdrawal or death is also available till December 1 for the governorship and state houses of assembly positions.
