Yola — Residents of Maiha town in Adamawa State say Boko Haram militants have withdrawn from the town, 24 hours after suffering a heavy defeat in an encounter with soldiers, but killed at least 10 civilians.

565-Boko-Haram-insurgents(1)A resident said the militants who invaded Maiha on Monday, removed a flag they earlier hoisted at the Jalingo Primary School at about 1:30 pm on Tuesday and headed towards Mubi. He said they rounded up young people and shot or slit their throats while warning other residents of the consequences of disobeying their orders or cooperating with security personnel.

A security source said soldiers clashed with the militants late Monday but later withdrew. The source said both sides suffered casualties but the militants may have withdrawn as a result of heavy casualty.

In another development, a resident of Mubi who escaped the militants on Sunday, said they killed 15 civil servants. He said they are usually suspicious of young men who work in the civil service or are active in politics.
