A total of 98 lawyers have been shortlisted by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee to be considered for the conferment of the position of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
These names include that of the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Abdulkarim Kana (Life Bencher), former Nigeria Bar Association national officials, Monday Ubani, Kunle Edun and Dr Rapala Nduka.
Also on the list is the Legal Adviser of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (Wendy Kuku), NBA Bwari branch chairman, Paul Daudu, as well as notable Abuja based human rights lawyer, Terkaa Aondo.
These names were listed in a document signed and released by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and the Secretary, LPPC, Hajo Bello.
The document stated that the shortlisted names are for the knowledge of the general public so that they can make comments on the integrity, reputation and competence of the lawyers. He made it clear that it was not an indication of their success in the process.
The document read: ‘The general public is hereby invited to comment on the integrity, reputation, and competence of the listed Applicants.’
‘For the avoidance of doubt, the publication of the names of the shortlisted Applicants is not an indication of their success in the process.’
According to the document, 87 lawyers were shortlisted for the advocate category, while 11 shortlisted for the academic category. It further read that every complaint made must be followed with a verifying affidavit deposed by the writer before a Superior Court of Record in Nigeria or before a Notary public which must be in 20 copies.
