At least 43 persons have been reportedly abducted by gunmen in Kakidawa, Gidan Goga district, Maradun LGA of Zamfara state.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred on Sunday after heavily armed men invaded the village at about 2am.

The gunmen shot sporadically, causing residents to scamper into nearby bushes. They then conducted a house-to-house search, abducting women and children who were unable to escape, locals said.

Community leaders told journalists that the gunmen are yet to establish contact with families of the victims over ransom payment.

Yazid Abubakar, police spokesperson in Zamfara, told TheCable that he was yet to be apprised of the development.

There has been a spike in the spate of kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria’s northern region in recent times.
