Former UNESCO scholar, Prof Oguakwa, dies at 88

A former UNESCO scholar, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Jim Oguakwa is dead.

His family announced his passing in a message that his son, Rt. Hon. Barrister KGB Oguakwa, a former Chairman of the Committee on Aviation in the House of Representatives signed. Professor Oguakwa died peacefully at home surrounded by the warmth of his beloved family, according to the statement which follows:

A DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIC, A GENTLE, PEACEFUL MAN, DEPARTS
“In total submission to the will of Almighty God and with profound gratitude to God for an accomplished life well spent, The Professor & Professor Mrs. J.U. Oguakwa Family of Umuoha, Umuome, Inyi, Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, announces the translation unto eternity of our Father, Grandfather and Patriarch, Professor James Udengene Oguakwa, Ph.D., who peacefully joined the ranks of the Saints Triumphant, at home, in the early hours of dawn, surrounded by the warmth of his beloved family. He was aged 88 years.

“A Professor of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, UNESCO Scholar, Nobel Prize for Chemistry Nominee, Professor J.U. Oguakwa was onetime a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (U.N.N.), apart from having also variously held positions of:

Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Dean of Faculty of Physical Sciences etc at the U.N.N. A leading post-Professorial-level researcher into African Medicinal Plants, he did also served as Visiting Professor of Chemistry to many Nigerian universities.

“A devout Catholic, and an acclaimed man of truth, peace and humanity development, Professor J.U. Oguakwa held the Chieftaincy title of Ozo Igbo Ndu 1 of Agbada-Inyi and, for over 8 decades, held the Ozo title as an invaluable Member of the traditionally prestigious exclusive Ozo Inyi Cultural Society.

“He is survived by his three children, eight grandchildren, aged siblings and numerous relations. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.

“The programme for the funeral obsequies will be announced later.
“Meanwhile, we will be grateful for your prayers for the peaceful repose of his kind and gentle soul.”
