Nigeria on Wednesday bounced back from their opening day 6-0 defeat at the hands of Japan to secure a 3-1 win over Canada in their second Group B game of the Papua New Guinea 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Goals from Chinaza Uchendu, Joy Bokiri and Chiwendu Ihezuo cancelled out a goal from Canada’s Gabrielle Carle and helped Nigeria to win their first game at the competition.
Nigeria are now third in the group with three points – same as second-placed Japan, who lost 1-0 to Spain also on Wednesday. Spain have six points.
The Falconets will play their last match against Spain on Sunday while Japan take on the Canadians in their last match.
Canada started the better side, pegging the Nigerians back. They took the lead in the 15th minute after Carle shot past Christy Ohiaeriaku after getting a pass in the penalty area.
The Falconets drew level from the spot after a Canadian defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Uchendu converted the spot kick to level the scores.
