It was a dark day for gender-related bills in the ongoing clause by clause Constitution amendment review.
The bill to create 111 additional seats for women in the National Assembly and several seats in the State Houses of Assembly was defeated.
Aside from the above bill, the House also rejected a bill that sought to allow 35% affirmative action in political parties.
The bill was taken twice but voted against. Bamidele Salam from Osun State even moved an amendment for the percentage to be reduced to 15%, but it was also rejected.
Diaspora voting also suffered defeat during the exercise, as the lawmakers rejected the bill.
Furthermore, the House also rejected 20% ministerial appointment, however, Femi Gbajabiamila used a voice vote to smuggle it in.
