Popular Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, better known as AY Comedian, has raised concerns over the massive profits declared by banks despite the country’s struggling economy.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, AY questioned how financial institutions manage to report trillions in earnings every quarter while many Nigerians grapple with economic hardship.
He particularly pointed out excessive bank charges, suggesting that customers are being unfairly debited.
“Where do banks get the trillions they declare as profits every quarter, even in a struggling economy? The small charges and debits on our accounts need to be challenged. Many of these fees are unique to Nigeria. Why is that? #BankingFees #Nigeria #Transparency #Shalom,” he wrote.
AY’s post has sparked reactions from social media users, with many echoing similar frustrations over unexplained deductions and high transaction fees imposed by banks.
In recent times, Nigerians have expressed outrage over multiple deductions such as maintenance fees, SMS charges, and other levies that seem to have no justification. Some have even called on regulatory bodies to intervene and ensure more transparency in the banking sector.
