Army, DSS kill seven ESN members, arrest five in Rivers

A report by PM News indicates that the Nigerian army said that no fewer than seven ESN members in Rivers community were killed in a joint clearance operation it carried out with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Legit.ng gathered that the Army also said that it also arrested five operatives of ESN, an armed wing of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), while arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

According to the report, this was contained in a statement issued by the Army authority on the night of Thursday, May 27, saying that the operation took place at about 6:15 pm.

The statement reportedly read:

“6 Div in conjunction with Keystone, DSS and NSCDC led by Brigadier-General MD Danja conducted clearance/raid operations at suspected IPOB/ESN camp in Agbochia Forest along Pipelines Road Ogali/ Kom-Kom boundary between Eleme and Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers state.”

The Army was also quoted to have said that the team came in contact with the IPOB/ESN members during the clearance/raid Operations.

It further stated that during the firefight, seven IPOB/ESN members were neutralized and 5 suspects were arrested.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that some hoodlums have attacked the Iwollo Oghe, Ezeagu police division in Enugu state.

It was reported that the attackers killed five persons during the raid on the police station on midnight on Monday, May 24.

The spokesperson of the command, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident but refrained from making any official statement about the issue.

Ndukwe said he was awaiting the on-the-spot assessment of the damages and casualties by the Enugu police commissioner, Mohammed Aliyu.

In a related report, the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, launched a new security operation to check the separatist agenda of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the southeast zone.

Baba said on Tuesday, May 18, that the operation codenamed, Operation Restore Peace (Operation RP) was customized to bring back the cherished peace that the southeast was known for.
