Popular micro-blogging site, Twitter has become a dumping ground for the latest trends and memes that would tickle your fancy and make you laugh your socks off.
The latest craze is the Stingy Men Association of Nigeria (SMAN), which was inspired by tight-fisted men, who have no intentions of spending their hard-earned coins on any woman.
The trend reportedly started in Zambia where men pledged not to spend more than a certain amount of money on their girlfriend as they would rather invest it and earn interest.
Popular music producer, Don Jazzy left fans amused after he joined the association and declared himself as the “head of the union” in Nigeria. The Mavin Records boss showed off his identification card bearing his personal details. He also released the anthem for the association.
The trend immediately began to spread like wildfire as men began to scramble to join the association.
The motto for the association is “I will see what I can do”, an excuse that men often give to evade some financial responsibilities.
Their round logo on the identification card shows a fist showing solidarity for their cause and a clause below that reads; “Don’t give shishi” which means, don’t give anything.
Several celebrities like Rudeboy, Mr Eazi, Falz, Praiz, Craze clown, Sound Sultan among others also declared their membership. One could easily download the registration form and template for the ID Cards for free on the Internet.
If you scroll through your Twitter timeline, there is no doubt that you would come across men who are proud members of this association.
A comedy video making the rounds shows the moment Don Jazzy caught Mr Macaroni giving a lady money after joining Stingy Men Association.
To get back at men, some women also formed their very own faux group called “Stingy Women Association of Nigeria.”
However, this didn’t sit well with some women as they questioned the motive behind the logo.
The logo shows a woman crossing her legs, indicating that no more sex. Hence, if a man chooses to be stingy, then he would not be allowed to sleep with any woman.
Toke Makinwa was seemingly the first female celebrity to show interest in joining the stingy women association. The media personality got more than what she bargained for after she urged other women to join her. Makinwa faced backlash from tweeps.
Big Brother Naija season first runner up, Dorathy was quick to distance herself from the association after a representative of the group informed her that a membership card had been designed for her.
Some male celebrities were also against the Stingy Men Association of Nigeria. One particular celebrity known as D’Banj kicked off his own association called ‘Cheerful Givers’. The singer declared himself as the president of the association after the launch. According to the singer, his office seeks for the betterment and welfare of African women. It didn’t come as a surprise when he gained the approval of many women.
