8th annual Silicon Valley African Film Festival

I will like to invite you to join us at the opening ceremonies of our 8th annual Silicon Valley African Film Festival on Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Historic Hoover Theatre, 1635 Park Avenue, San Jose, CA 95126.

The festival will kick off on Friday, September 29 at 5:30PM with a Red Carpet walk, Step and Repeat photos, a courtyard reception; parade of flags of the countries in the festival, libation ceremony, live entertainment and the screening of our Opening Night film. Activities will continue throughout the weekend with the screening of 70+ films from over 26 African countries, fashion show, dialogue with filmmakers in attendance, African market, food and more.

This year’s festival is jam packed with world and North American premieres of many exciting films from Africa’s seasoned and emerging filmmakers (many will be in attendance). From our opening night film “Potato Potahto” by award winning Ghanaian filmmaker, Shirley Frimpong Manso to “Zawaja Gali – Marriage Is Expensive” by the South Sudanese director, Sam Lukudu, the laugh out loud comedy “Lodgers” from Nigeria, brilliant animation “Kura” from Kenya, political satire “Yenegen Alwoldem – I won’t Bear No More” from Ethiopia, “The Road to Sunshine” from Malawi, Ayanda from South Africa, “Occupation Killer” from Morocco, etc., this will be a weekend to remember!

A special feature of the 2017 SVAFF is our Diaspora Spotlight USA program. The program will celebrate Africa’s ancestral footprint in the USA through films, performances and a community forum called “The Conversation: Africans and African Americans – I am because You are!”. This community dialogue is aimed at bringing our communities together to celebrate our shared ancestry, strengthen our bond and chart a path for our common future.

Now in its 8th year and voted Best of Silicon Valley 2015 (Metro, March 2015), the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) promotes an understanding and appreciation of Africa and Africans through moving images. Aptly themed “Africa through the African lens” SVAFF is the only film festival in California that is exclusively focused on films made by African filmmakers and, crucially, provides audiences with exquisite lenses to the real Africa.

A Press Release is attached to this email and we look forward to seeing you at the festival. We also have opportunities for media partnership, and will be happy to discuss it further with you.

Sincerely,

Chike C. Nwoffiah
